Scientists have identified what appears to be the first known transmissible cancer in fish, after a Nature study published July 22 found that melanoma cells in brown bullhead catfish from Lake Memphremagog carry the genetic signature of a shared cancer lineage.
The short version: this is unusual because the cancer cell itself seems to be the thing moving between animals. It does not mean people can catch cancer from the lake, from catfish, or from another person in ordinary contact.
The finding matters because true transmissible cancers are rare in nature. Before this study, naturally occurring examples were documented in dogs, Tasmanian devils and several bivalves such as clams and mussels. The catfish case would add the first fish and first freshwater ecosystem to that short list.
What changed
Anglers and biologists began noticing brown bullheads with raised black skin lesions in the lake, which spans Vermont and Quebec, in 2012. Earlier sampling found confirmed melanoma lesions in roughly 23% to 37% of sampled fish, far higher than researchers expected for the species.
Researchers first considered whether a pollutant, virus or other pathogen might explain the pattern. The new study instead points to a stranger mechanism: tumor samples from different fish were genetically more similar to one another than to the healthy tissue of the fish carrying them.
That pattern is the key. In a conventional cancer, each animal’s tumor would be expected to mostly reflect that animal’s own cells and mutations. In this case, the study reported large numbers of variants shared across tumor samples but absent from the host fish, which supports the idea that one clonal cancer lineage has been spreading.
What scientists still do not know
The route of transmission remains unresolved. Brown bullhead catfish gather closely during spawning, which could create opportunities for cells to move through direct contact. The study also discusses possible transfer through water, sediment, skin, gills or the mouth, but those routes have not been proven.
The long-term effect on fish populations is also uncertain. Some transmissible cancers are devastating for their host species, while others persist without wiping out populations. Researchers said more sampling is needed to understand where the cancer began, whether it already exists in other brown bullhead populations, and how dangerous it is to affected fish.
What it means for people
The practical takeaway is caution without panic. Lake Memphremagog is a drinking-water source for more than 175,000 people, which makes the discovery easy to misread as a human health warning. ABC News reported that scientists say there is no known risk of this potentially transmissible melanoma transferring to people, and no evidence that people can catch it from the fish or lake water.
The discovery is still scientifically important. It gives cancer researchers another natural example of malignant cells surviving outside the original host, avoiding immune defenses and growing somewhere new. For readers, the right question is not whether catfish cancer is about to become a human contagion. It is how rare exceptions in wildlife can reveal what cancer cells are capable of under the right biological conditions.
