LeBron James is headed to the Philadelphia 76ers for his record-extending 24th NBA season, choosing a new title chase over retirement. James announced the move on social media Friday, July 24, 2026, after saying he had seriously considered ending his career.

James will sign a reported two-year, $8 million contract that includes a player option, agent Rich Paul told ESPN. The deal would make Philadelphia the fourth franchise of James' career and place the four-time champion alongside Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey.

The announcement closes one of the NBA offseason's biggest open questions. James called it his “last decision” and said, “I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team.”

What changed

James, 41, had already told the Los Angeles Lakers that he would play elsewhere in 2026-27. He spent eight seasons in Los Angeles and won the 2020 championship, but his latest decision shifts him back to the Eastern Conference for the first time since leaving Cleveland in 2018.

Philadelphia now adds the NBA's all-time leading scorer and one of the league's most experienced postseason playmakers to a roster built around Embiid, Maxey and Brown. The 76ers acquired Brown earlier in July, creating a veteran-heavy core with championship experience and multiple primary scorers.

The contract figure is also striking. A reported $8 million over two years is far below the salary associated with James for most of his career, reinforcing his stated focus on competing for another championship rather than maximizing his final payday. The player option gives him flexibility over the second season.

Why the move matters

James is pursuing a fifth NBA title and would become the first player to complete a 24th season. He has previously won championships with Cleveland, Miami and Los Angeles; a title with Philadelphia would give him championships with four franchises.

For the 76ers, the move raises the stakes immediately. Philadelphia has not won an NBA championship since 1983. James' playmaking could ease some of the offensive burden on Maxey and Brown, while his size and passing offer another way to create favorable possessions around Embiid.

There are still important questions. James' role, workload and fit with three other high-usage stars will have to be worked out, and Philadelphia's ceiling will depend heavily on the health of its veteran core. The reported agreement alone does not settle how coach and players will divide late-game possessions or manage minutes across a long season.
