The United States now has 684 publicly documented data center projects that are announced, planned, expanding or under construction, according to a Daily Newsfront review updated July 30, 2026. The newest entry is a proposed 1.8-gigawatt artificial-intelligence campus at the former Paducah uranium-enrichment site in Kentucky, where Brookfield Asset Management and NextEra Energy were selected for a federal public-private development.

The short answer: the construction pipeline reaches 49 states, but it is concentrated in a handful of power-rich or fiber-rich markets. Texas leads with 57 projects, followed by Virginia with 44, Georgia with 35, Ohio with 34 and Pennsylvania with 29. Vermont is the only state with no active pipeline project in the database used for this tracker; no active project was listed for Washington, D.C.

This page lists every project in the July 17 snapshot of the open Server Country database whose latest status was announced, planned, under construction or expansion, then adds the Paducah selection and the July 20 Amentum–DC BLOX selection at South Carolina’s Savannah River Site. Operational and canceled projects are excluded. The result is a best-effort public-record inventory, not a permit registry or a promise that every proposal will be built.

How this tracker was built

The base dataset contains 1,048 U.S. data center records and is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license by the authors of Data Center Policy across the 50 States. It reports 408 planned projects, 199 under construction, 64 expansions, 11 announced projects, 270 operational facilities and 96 canceled projects as of its July 17 snapshot.

For this page, “pipeline” means a project with a current status of announced, planned, under construction or expanding. It does not mean construction equipment is already on site. “Planned” can cover rezoning, permitting, land assembly, utility study or another preconstruction stage. “Announced” is used when a project has been publicly disclosed but has not yet advanced to a more specific stage.

  • Included: new campuses, individual buildings tracked as separate projects, phased developments, major expansions, research and government computing facilities, colocation sites, cloud campuses and AI-focused builds.
  • Excluded: projects labeled operational or canceled in the source snapshot, power plants without a named data center project, and speculative sites with no public project record.
  • Known limitations: companies often conceal tenants, capacity, water demand, incentives and construction schedules; local filings can lag; projects may be renamed, split into phases or quietly delayed.

The two newest federal-site projects

Paducah, Kentucky: The Department of Energy selected Brookfield to develop and operate a data center at the government-owned Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. NextEra Energy is expected to build and own 2 gigawatts of natural-gas generation and 2.6 gigawatts of battery storage to support a 1.8-gigawatt AI campus. The Associated Press reported that the broader complex carries a $100 billion investment figure and is expected to be completed in 2031, subject to a power-service agreement and regulatory approval.

Savannah River Site, South Carolina: On July 20, the National Nuclear Security Administration selected Amentum to negotiate a phased lease for a 1-gigawatt AI data center paired with roughly 2 gigawatts of on-site generation, initially using natural gas and later nuclear power. DC BLOX is Amentum’s data center partner. The agency stressed that selection for negotiations is not a final lease award and that permitting, safety and security reviews remain.

Piketon, Ohio: The base database already includes the SoftBank PORTS Technology Campus announced March 20. The Department of Energy described a 10-gigawatt data center development supported by 10 gigawatts of new generation, including 9.2 gigawatts of natural gas. Construction was expected to begin in 2026. At that size, it is the single largest power-capacity entry in this tracker.

The national pipeline at a glance

The 684-project total consists of 408 planned, 199 under construction, 64 expanding and 13 announced projects. Because companies do not consistently disclose megawatts or investment and because some campus-level and phase-level figures can overlap, this page does not add every disclosed dollar or megawatt into a national total.

The five largest state pipelines are Texas (57), Virginia (44), Georgia (35), Ohio (34) and Pennsylvania (29). The complete directory below covers all 49 states with an active entry; Vermont and Washington, D.C., have none in this snapshot.

What the list does—and does not—prove

A public announcement is not the same as a completed project. Data centers can spend years in zoning, utility interconnection, financing and environmental review. Developers may announce a campus at full build-out even when only the first building has financing or power. Some proposals will be delayed, resized, sold or canceled.

The count is also not a measure of current electricity demand. A 1-gigawatt campus can be energized in stages, and the nameplate capacity disclosed for a future campus may be far above the load of its first operating phase. The Energy Information Administration says the fastest near-term load growth is expected in ERCOT and PJM, the grid regions covering Texas and much of the Mid-Atlantic, where this tracker also shows the densest pipelines.

Investment totals require similar caution. The Federal Reserve’s project-level research estimates data center investment could reach a $370 billion annualized pace in the second quarter of 2026, but its 2027 range spans $360 billion to $930 billion depending on how many plans are abandoned and how quickly projects move from planning to construction. That uncertainty is why this tracker keeps project-level figures rather than presenting one seemingly precise national sum.

Why the pipeline matters

Data centers consumed about 4.4% of U.S. electricity in 2023, according to the Department of Energy, and the department’s 2024 national study projected a rise to 6.7% to 12% by 2028. The EIA now expects data centers to be a major driver of U.S. electricity-demand growth and says long lead times for power plants and grid connections limit how quickly supply can catch up.

For communities, the practical questions come before the servers turn on: who pays for substations and transmission, whether water use is disclosed, how tax incentives are structured, what backup generation is permitted, how many permanent jobs are guaranteed and whether a phased campus has enforceable build deadlines. A long project list is useful only if residents, regulators and investors can distinguish a proposal from an approved, financed and energized facility.

What to watch next

The two federal-site selections added after the database snapshot still face negotiations and approvals. Paducah’s power-service agreement requires state regulatory review, while the Savannah River selection must clear lease negotiations, permitting, safety and security evaluations. Elsewhere, utility interconnection queues, local moratoriums, zoning votes and power-supply contracts will determine which of the 684 pipeline entries become operating facilities.
