Campus police and Chesterfield County officers responded shortly before 1:30 a.m. on August 15 near the Quad Annexes, according to information provided by police and the university to the Associated Press. Officers found five people with gunshot wounds and all five were taken to hospitals.

The university ended the lockdown at about 9 a.m., roughly seven and a half hours after the response began. Officials said there was no continuing threat to the wider campus, although a substantial law-enforcement presence remained and people were asked to avoid the area around the residence halls.
