I still tip at a sit-down restaurant and anywhere someone is actually providing service. But the tablet asking for 20% on a bottled drink I picked up myself has turned every checkout into a little negotiation. Lately I hit “no tip” faster than I used to, and I doubt that was the intended effect.

I get the annoyance, but until service jobs pay reliably better I am not using the badly designed screen as a reason to tip less. The worker did not choose the interface.
I agree the worker is not the problem. I am talking about places where tipping was never part of the transaction before the new checkout system arrived.
The preset starting at 22% is what gets me. I still tip, but now I am doing mental math while someone watches me rotate an iPad.
This is very country-specific too. Importing the screen without the same wage norms makes the whole interaction even stranger.
